Day 1 of 8
Begin your Himachal journey from Chandigarh, driving through the pine-clad foothills as the plains give way to mountain curves. Arrive in Shimla, the former summer capital of British India, where colonial architecture meets Himalayan grandeur. Take an evening walk along the famous Mall Road and Ridge, soaking in the panoramic views of snow-dusted peaks.
Dive deeper into Shimla's colonial legacy and natural beauty. Visit the Gothic Viceregal Lodge where pivotal decisions of the British Raj were made, then explore the Himalayan Bird Park and the bustling Lakkar Bazaar famous for wooden crafts. Walk through the Jakhoo Temple forest to meet the resident langur monkeys at the highest point in Shimla.
Set off on the legendary Shimla-Manali highway, one of India's most scenic drives. The road winds through apple orchards, deodar forests, and the dramatic Mandi gorge along the Beas River. Stop at the tiny town of Kullu to stretch your legs and sample fresh apple juice before arriving in Manali as the Himalayan peaks tower above you.
Explore both old and new Manali. Start with the ancient Hadimba Temple, a 16th-century wooden pagoda nestled in a deodar cedar forest. Cross the river to the charming Old Manali village with its stone cottages, riverside cafes, and backpacker energy. Visit the Vashisht hot springs and the Tibetan Monastery for a taste of the diverse cultures that call Manali home.
Head to Solang Valley for a day of adventure and mountain thrills. In summer, try paragliding, zorbing, and rope climbing against a backdrop of glacial peaks. In winter, the valley transforms into a snow playground for skiing and snowboarding. If the Rohtang Pass is open (seasonal permit required), drive up to 3,978m for staggering views of the Lahaul Valley.
Leave the Kullu Valley and drive through the Kangra region toward Dharamshala, the seat of the Tibetan government-in-exile. The landscape shifts from alpine peaks to rolling tea gardens and subtropical forests. Arrive at Dharamshala and visit the Kangra Fort, one of the oldest forts in India, before settling into your hotel as prayer flags flutter overhead.
Ascend to McLeodganj, the hilltop abode of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the heart of Tibetan culture in India. Visit the Tsuglagkhang Complex with its golden Buddha and political history museum, then explore the colorful streets lined with Tibetan cafes, thangka painters, and singing bowl shops. Hike to the Bhagsu Waterfall for a refreshing close to your Himachal adventure.
Enjoy a final Tibetan breakfast of thukpa and momos before bidding farewell to the mountains. Transfer to Dharamshala Airport or Pathankot Railway Station. Take home memories of colonial hill stations, adventure valleys, and the peaceful wisdom of Tibetan culture that makes Himachal Pradesh India's most diverse mountain state.
