Overview

Ancient rock fortresses like Sigiriya, tea-clad hills of Nuwara Eliya, wild leopards at Yala, surf breaks at Arugam Bay, and warm beaches at Bentota — Sri Lanka is a full-spectrum tropical gem.

Sri Lanka packs eight UNESCO World Heritage sites, 26 national parks, and a thousand beaches into a teardrop-shaped island you can drive across in a day. The cultural triangle — Sigiriya's 5th-century rock fortress, Dambulla's cave temples, Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura's ancient ruins, and Kandy's Temple of the Tooth — covers 2,500 years of Buddhist and royal history. The hill country around Nuwara Eliya and Ella is Sri Lanka's tea heartland — ride the famous train between Kandy and Ella for some of the world's most scenic rail views. The south coast offers beaches for every mood: Unawatuna and Mirissa for swimming, Weligama and Hikkaduwa for surfing, Bentota for resorts. Wildlife is exceptional — Yala National Park has the highest leopard density in the world, Udawalawe is excellent for elephants, and whales are spotted off Mirissa from November to April.
