Abode of Clouds and Living Bridges
Living root bridges, crystal-clear rivers, and the wettest place on earth await in the abode of clouds. Meghalaya is a hidden gem of northeast India where nature has sculpted an otherworldly landscape of limestone caves, plunging waterfalls, and emerald canyons.
Descend thousands of steps through jungle to stand on a bridge grown over 500 years by human hands.
Paddle over the transparent Umngot River and watch fish swim beneath your crystal-clear boat.
Crawl, wade, and scramble through India's fourth-longest cave system with a headlamp.
Stroll along misty cliff edges with waterfalls plunging into the Bangladesh plains far below.
October to May
Post-monsoon (Oct–Nov) and spring (Mar–May) are ideal with clear skies and waterfalls at full flow. Monsoon (Jun–Sep) brings extreme rain — Cherrapunji gets 11,000 mm annually. Winters (Dec–Feb) are cool and pleasant at 5–15 °C.
The trek to the double-decker root bridge involves 3,500 steep steps — be reasonably fit.
Carry waterproof bags and quick-dry clothing; rain can arrive without warning any time of year.
Meghalaya is a dry state on certain days — check local liquor laws before planning.
Respect tribal customs in villages; always ask before photographing people.
Inner Line Permits are NOT required for Meghalaya, unlike some other NE states.
