Overview

The land of high passes offers breathtaking cold desert landscapes, ancient Buddhist monasteries, and the highest motorable roads in the world. Pangong Lake's ever-changing blues and the rugged Nubra Valley make Ladakh a bucket-list adventure.

Ladakh is a realm of extremes — the air is thin, the sun fierce, and the landscape so surreal it feels like another planet. Perched at an average altitude of 11,500 ft, this cold desert is carved by the Indus River and framed by the Karakoram and Zanskar ranges. The stark, mineral-toned mountains shift from ochre to violet as the sun moves across a relentlessly blue sky, and the silence is profound enough to hear your own heartbeat. The crown jewel is Pangong Tso, a 134-km-long lake that oscillates between turquoise, sapphire, and emerald depending on the light. Nubra Valley — reached via the legendary Khardung La at 17,982 ft — surprises with sand dunes and rare Bactrian camels. Hemis, Thiksey, and Diskit monasteries dot the landscape, their prayer flags fluttering against impossibly dramatic backdrops. In Leh town itself, whitewashed stupas line bustling bazaars where you can sip butter tea and shop for turquoise jewellery. Adventure seekers can attempt the Chadar frozen-river trek in winter, raft the Zanskar rapids in summer, or ride a Royal Enfield along the Manali-Leh Highway. Ladakh rewards those who brave its altitude with experiences found nowhere else on earth.
